James & Sarah Leeming with sons Albert & Edgar.

You have reached the LEEMING Family History website

There have been Leeming families in the Ripon area of Yorkshire for centuries. The earliest mention I have found so far is a lease granted in 1507 by Marmaduke, abbot of Fountains Abbey, to Emmota Lemynge and her son Maurice. Emmota took over the lease of a tenement with appurtenances in Eavestone, which had previously been granted to her late husband, William. (Source: The Fountains Abbey Lease Book, ed. D.J.H Michelmore, YAS Record Series Vol CXL)

I have been researching my Leeming line for 15 or more years. I am a direct descendant of WILLIAM LEEMING AND MARGARET BOGGETT OF EAVESTONE I have recorded here the results of my research to-date. I have attempted to check and verify all the data in the tree where possible. Sometimes errors do creep in or an over-enthusiastic assumption is made - so if you spot anything that is wrong, please let me know. And if you can add anything to the tree, again please do contact me. Any help is always really appreciated. This is an on-going project.

William has left little trace of his life. He was a yeoman farmer in Eavestone, a small hamlet to the west of Ripon in what is now North Yorkshire. He married Margaret Boggett, daughter of John Boggett, a linen weaver, in Ripon Cathedral on 24th February 1759. They probably had 3 sons and 4 daughters. When William died in 1809, he left a will giving scant details. He is buried in Sawley Churchyard. His burial does not give his age.

This is my brickwall

Over the years, I have been helped along the way by many kind researchers who have willingly and most generously given me information and advice. They are too numerous to name individually but they know who they are!

I thank them for their generosity and their help

In particular, though, I must thank Nigel Brooks for his boundless enthusiasm, his extensive research, genealogical advice and his technical know-how, without which this website would not be possible.
